Pete Morelli: Anthony Barr’s hit on Aaron Rodgers would be a penalty this year
Vikings linebacker Anthony Barr was not penalized last season when he hit Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers after Rodgers delivered a pass while out of the pocket, but something similar this year would have a different result. That was the word from NFL referee Pete Morelli on Thursday.

What a lame penalty. I can only wonder how much the Packers and Aaron Rodgers whined and moaned to get this thing going.
NOTEBOOK: Anthony Barr on NFL's New Rules

I’m sure there’s going to be some debate from the players, coaches and officials as to who is right and who is wrong, but we’ve got to try our best as players to play within the rules.”

NFL should just make it a rule that the QB cannot run pass the LOS.

Or at very least, you can't pump fake outside the pocket. If the expectation is for the defender to slow down and roll when they see a throwing motion then you should no longer be able to use that motion as a feign.808vikingsfan wrote: ↑Thu Aug 02, 2018 9:08 pm NFL should just make it a rule that the QB cannot run pass the LOS.
The helmet rule is going to be a problem as well, already a bad call against the Bears today. The defender didn't lead with the crown nor did he hit the receiver in the head but they still threw the flag in the endzone.

Just saw another bad call with 5:14 left in the 4th . Good hit up the middle that got called for roughness. At some point, you have to blame the QB for throwing passes that leave the receiver out to dry.S197 wrote: ↑Thu Aug 02, 2018 9:46 pm Or at very least, you can't pump fake outside the pocket. The next step is going to be the strategic benefit of 'getting your money's worth' since you are going to get flagged for anything you do to the QB. They are about one inch from causing more injuries than they are going to prevent by a long shot.

They are already there. You have to hit low which is tearing up more knees. We are seeing more defenders taking knees to the head also, guys running into their own teammates, etc.
The NFL needs to recognize they've over stepped on this crap, just like they tried to over litigate the "catch rules". They might as well just make it flag football or ban the play of defense if they are going to keep this up.

Dumb rule. I get that the NFL wants to limit the amount of injuries to the faces of the business, but they don't seem to understand that every new rule that favors QBs seems to encourage QBs to get riskier and riskier outside the pocket which is actually getting them more injured. Rodgers is the biggest culprit of this - he's a smart guy so he uses every little thing he can do to take advantage of the advantage he's got as a QB - that's why he escapes all the damn time.

The other thing is Rodgers getting hurt could be a blessing in disguise for him and the Packers. It showed GBs management that they were incompetent on many other levels and Rodgers covered a lot of it up. So if it helps the Packers improve, the leagues favorite team could contend seriously again.
I totally get rules about heads and trying to lessen concussions. But this kind of crap is why people aren't watching the NFL any.ore. why goodell still has a job is so far beyond me. If he isn't careful, the league will start losing money in the next few years. He is that bad.

Green Bay's management will never admit incompetency. Why? Because as a publicly owned franchise, management is accountable to exactly no one.PurpleMustReign wrote: ↑Sat Aug 04, 2018 10:21 pm The other thing is Rodgers getting hurt could be a blessing in disguise for him and the Packers. The Packers have success because of one man -- Aaron Rodgers. We've seen it when he goes down. They stink. Check out Belichick's record without Brady ... 18-6. Andy Reid's record without his various starters ... 17-18. Mike Zimmer has barely had a season with a starting quarterback, and he's won 2 division titles in 3 years. Great coaches find a way. McCarthy's record without Rodgers ... 6-14-1. It's pathetic. Even with Rodgers, they're 5-6 in the playoffs since winning the SB.
They draft poorly, and they have been reluctant to sign free agents. They spend less than 40% of their salary cap on defense. Yet Packer management continues to operate as they always have. Who does McCarthy answer to? Ted Thompson. Who does Ted Thompson answer to? Nobody. There's no accountability. That's what a good, competent owner gives a team. Accountability and resources.
The Green Bay Packers are being kept afloat by an all-time great quarterback, a quarterback who would probably be viewed as the G.O.A.T. if the Packers had ever put anybody around him. They're a joke without Rodgers.
Rant over.
Go ahead. I dare you.

3/4ths of Barr's tackle was clean. However, he did drive Rogers into the ground towards the end. If he allows his momentum to keep going forward, he hits him to the floor and rolls off of him. However, he doesn't he hits him, and then drives him as they are falling down. I love Barr but it is what it is.

This is just dumb. If the QB is out of the pocket like Rodgers was last year, he sure has the option to run... or pass... or he can pump fake and then pass, or run. He sees the defenders in front of him. He is not "defenseless". If he doesn't want to take a hit, he can curl up in a ball and give himself up.
