Three Surprise Cuts You Might See From The Vikings

Post by fiestavike »

The Vikings are a team ready to compete now for a championship, and also a team up against the salary cap. This means facing difficult decisions. For instance, imagine the final DL roster spot comes down to Ifaedi Idenigbo and Stephen Weatherly, two players under contract through 2019 on rookie deals. How tempting is it to consider letting go of Brian Robison in that circumstance so as to keep both prospects?

Along this line of thinking, I'm going to propose 3 veterans (not including Robison) who I think might not make the 2018 team.

1. Terrance Newman. At best, he's 5th on the depth chart, possibly 6th, and while his knowledge is tremendous, he is a very old man by NFL standards. Hopefully he'll be kept on as a coach, but I don't think Horace Richardson, or Marcus Sherels are going to be jettisoned for one more year of Newman. Even Holton Hill might be deemed to have greater long term value.

2. Andrew Sendejo. The vikings might trade Sendejo. The Cowboys could use safety help, and Sendejo is a Texas boy, but being due 5.5 next year, it might be hard to find someone willing to surrender resources for what might justifiably be considered an overpaid S. Jayron Kearse could also be cut, but he's a special teams ace, and its easier within the culture of a team to elevate a role player up the ladder, than to demote a player like Sendejo back down to the role special teams ace. If the Vikings don't keep 5 safeties, I think Sendejo might be the most likely to be given his walking papers.

3. Trevor Siemian. The QB has been lackluster in preseason play, and throughout his whole career in DEN. It might well not be worth holding onto a 3rd QB when another position player brings real value. Siemian is sitting on 2,000,000 with no guarantees. The Vikings risk little by letting him walk, and free up cap and a roster spot with his departure.

Would love to hear what players you all think might be cut.

Sendejo isn't going anywhere unless he gets hurt. Newman getting cut wouldn't knock me over in shock.
It's a good question. There will almost certainly be a surprise. They won't keep three QBs I don't think. I could be wrong.

I already figured they would cut Trevor and keep Sloter.

I'm not that high on Sloter, but Siemian inspires no confidence either. If the Vikings want Superbowl insurance at the QB position, they need to make a trade with the Jets and bring back teddy. One year for 6 million is a bargain.

I doubt Teddy will be back. We already made that decision.
Last week in mop up he had 1TD and 1 int and the Jets lost.

I watched. He played exceptionally well, despite three of his five incompletions being perfect passes which were dropped.

If Cousins goes down, this team is toast. One position they should try to upgrade is backup QB, but Teddy is probably the only realistic way to do that. They should do it. He might well be an upgrade to the starting QB position.

I think Sendejo is solid. I don't see any interest on the part of Zimmer or the Vikings to trade him regardless of his salary situation.

Newman will make the team. He's a savvy vet who provides leadership and character to the secondary. He's not as safe as Sendejo, but still should be safe this season.

I think Sloter makes the team, although Spielman might still make a move at the position. Trevor is probably toast.

Trevor Siemian is not getting cut.

The purpose of a backup quarterback isn't just to play if the starter goes down. It's also to help prepare the starter for each game. Siemian has 30 starts under his belt. Sloter has never taken a snap in a regular-season game. You tell me who's more valuable to Kirk Cousins in the quarterback room.

Newman, I could agree with. But I don't see Zimmer cutting his boy.

Why all the hate for Andrew Sendejo? The guy has improved every year he's been here. Zimmer has turned him into a quality starter. Not a Pro Bowler, not a game-changer like Harrison Smith, but a quality starter who knows what he's doing and gets himself in position. In Zimmer's scheme, those qualities are highly valued. There is no way Mike Zimmer cuts Andrew Sendejo. Heck, if he does, I'll be pissed.

If they let Sloter go I will be upset. He has two last second preseason wins to his credit, and really nearly a third from last week. Semian has looked lost almost all preseason.

Sure? I'm not even sure I'll make it to work today. But if I were a betting man, I'd bet Siemian ends up being the No. 2.

That doesn't mean I think he's better that Sloter, and it doesn't mean I think Sloter gets cut. I've just seen this too many times to count. The experienced guy gets the nod as the backup.

Look at Cleveland. Baker Mayfield, the top pick in the entire draft, is No. 3 behind Drew Stanton. That's not because Stanton is better, and it's not because Mayfield has played poorly. It's because Stanton has the capacity to help Tyrod Taylor prepare. But if Taylor goes down for any length of time, my guess is that Mayfield would jump up to No. 1 in a hurry, with Stanton performing the same function for him.

If Cousins goes down for us, I believe Siemian would replace him in that game, but it doesn't mean he'd automatically become the starter. Again, I'm not pushing for Siemian to play if Cousins goes down. I'm just stating what I think will happen.

The problem I see with this analysis Kapp is you're thinking more like a coach than a typical fan. We don't allow that here.

I don't see Newman or Sendejo getting cut. I can see Seimien possibly but not the other two.

I would go with....

QB (3): Cousins, Siemian, Sloter
RB (3): Cook, Murray, Boone
FB (1): Ham
WR (5): Diggs, Thielen, Treadwell, Wright, Beebe
TE (3): Rudolph, Morgan, Conklin
OL (10): Reiff, Compton, Elflien, Remmers, Hill, Isidora, O'Neill, Collins, Jones, Gossett
Offense (25)

DE (5): Griffen, Hunter, Robison, Bower, Weatherly
DT (5): Joseph, Richardson, Johnson, Holmes
LB (5): Barr, Kendricks, Gedeon, Wilson, Downs
CB (6): Rhodes, Waynes, Hughes, Alexander, Newman, Hill
S (5): Smith, Sendejo, Iloka, Harris, Kearse
Defense (25)

Specialist (3): Carlson, McDermott, Quigley
Total (53)
