You know, I was thinking the same thing with Clemmings too. He's got the strength and won't have to lunge and whiff at speed rushers. I could see that

I said that last season. What did he play in college?

Strictly RT. Was a DE when he first arrived at Pitt. Played final 2 years at RT

Funny. A quick google of TJ:

Pitt OT TJ Clemmings is the draft's highest upside left tackle - MMQB

a couple of links below this...

T.J. Clemmings worst tackle in the NFL, according to PFF - CBSSports ...

He's very athletic so I haven't given up on him yet. Having such limited experience on the OL in college, I think being thrown into the fire and then moving around really messed him up.

Clemmings issues are mostly technique related. He plays too upright which makes him easy pickings for NFL caliber pass rushers. He needs to do some serious work to (re)develop his pass blocking technique. If that can be done, the he should be able to put himself into a position to allow his athletic talents to shine. So far the Vikings Coaching has been unable to help him access his potential.

This speaks to what I think has been an under reported aspect of our OL issues: Coaching unable to keep up with the times and unable to do what is needed to develop the modern college player into a viable NFL starter.

That's huge. This offense gets the ball out so fast they won't need to pass blocker very long.

I definitely think they overpaid for him and Remmers though.

With the salary cap shooting up this year and lack of talent at tackle in the draft, every tackle in FA got overpaid essentially

Wow, so somebody wanted to troll Riley Reiff so much that they actually put together a mix tape of bad plays?

All right. I'll be the optimistic one. Again. Here's the counter mix tape.

I don't think they were trolling at all. Just analyzing his game. 3 sacks in 2016. That's how much Clemmings gives up in a game.

The first one was just an outstanding edge rush by Kevin Dodd. If you are a tackle, you want to get beat outside - never across your face.

The second one was an amazing bull rush by Ryan Kerrigan. Riley seemed to not set his base out of his kicks very well.

The last one was a bad play by Riley. He anticipated Yannick coming outside and kicked accordingly. His weight was fully on his back right foot by the time Yannick came across his face.

There was a stat floating around that TJ Clemmings directly contributed to the demise of some 40%(!) of the Vikings offensive drives this past season. As I've been saying since January, it is hard to over estimate just how much of a positive impact replacing him will have on the offense.

I'm sure Reilly Reiff will never be Joe Thomas or Anthony Munoz and this just fine. We just need him to not be a coin flip on every down.
