On The Clock - fanspeak mock drafts

Post by fiestavike »

A place to post/discuss your "On the Clock" mock drafts. I find this tool a fun way to learn more about the players in the upcoming draft.

http://fanspeak.com/ontheclock/

My first this year...I used the CBS big board. I was disappointed with what was left at OT when I picked. I thought a kicker in the 4th and punter in the 7th who might both be upgrades were pretty good picks for a team with decent depth and youth at a lot of positions. Those are picks that pay dividends in year 1 despite being a 4th and 7th round selection. Couldn't turn down Hargreaves at 23. Elliott was an option, but its tougher to find a CB than a RB by a longshot. Killebrew in the 6th would be great, Forrest in the 7th is a project with intriguing athleticism for Zimmer.

This was fun....
I also do this using www.first-pick.com
So here was my go of it (I will do this probably 500 times before the draft)

1- DT A'Shawn Robinson Alabama
2-WR Corey Coleman Baylor
3-OT Kyle Murphy Stanford
4- OT Jerald Hawkins LSU
5- C Ryan Kelly Alabama
6- S Deandre Houston-Carson William & Mary
7- QB Kevin Hogan Stanford
7- QB Trevone Boykin. TCU

I generally went BPA with a little overkill on the OL. I however think that we need to bring in the best competition for each OL position. Also, the 2 QB's in the 7th round really give 2 drastic type of styles. We have Teddy, but what if Teddy can be improved ? Not looking to replace, but to challenge!
Probably not my best draft, but a 1st.

that's a lot of wheeling and dealing
My philosophy is small windows for success in the NFL I believe we are
close now. I gave up a future first round and moved down 5-6 times
(or close to it) doing that gave me 6-7 guys in the top 100.

That draft would rebuild our WR core .. I would keep

Round 5 Pick 1 (TENN): Keyarris Garrett, WR, Tulsa (A+)
Round 5 Pick 21: Roger Lewis, WR, Bowling Green (A+)
Round 2 Pick 23: Will Fuller, WR, Notre Dame (A)
Diggs Number 1 receiver
Wright 3 Reciever

Theilen might make the team as a special teams player and back up wide out...
Garrett might spend sometime on PUP or injured reserve to start out...

The OL would be Kalil or FA LT
Cody Whitehair LG
Sullivan or Round 3 Pick 23: Nick Martin, C, Notre Dame (A+) C
Brandon Fusco RG
Shepard, Cirles, Clemmings Harris at Starting tackle

I would make the most athletic OL into a fulltime jumbo blocker
/TE option...

Patterson, Peterson, Wallace, Loadholt, Greenway, Robison
Kalil would only stay if he reworked a deal.

Harrison Smith and Harris would start at safety

Peterson would probably be traded to Dallas (unable to work this in on the app)

Elliott, would compete for spilt time as starter at RB

Jaylon Smith would compete for OLB start ..

1- DT Andrew Billings, Baylor
2- WR Corey Coleman, Baylor
3- OG Denver Kirkland, Arkansas
4- OT Le'Raven Clark, Texas Tech
5- S Max Redfield, Notre Dame
6- C. Austin Blythe, Iowa
7- QB Jacoby Brissett, NC State
7- RB Kenyan Drake, Auburn

I like this. Really liked the first 4 picks. Could have had Mike Thomas instead of Coleman, but went with the speedy guy with a ton of catches.

23: R1P23 OLB MYLES JACK
UCLA

54: R2P23 G LANDON TURNER
NORTH CAROLINA

86: R3P23 G SEBASTIAN TRETOLA
ARKANSAS

118: R4P23 WR STERLING SHEPARD
OKLAHOMA

148: R5P21 C EVAN BOEHM
MISSOURI

162: R6P5 OT SPENCER DRANGO
BAYLOR

208: R7P19 QB NATE SUDFELD
INDIANA

212: R7P23 P TOM HACKETT
UTAH

Jack was available so I thought why not grab the final piece to the LB trilogy. Beef up the line and then add depth at qb and a replacement for Locke.

Tried to go straight BPA...
This draft is bad news for a lot of the less than stellar players on this team...Shaun Hill (wanna be a coach?), Blair Walsh, Jeff Locke. He gone!

23: R1P23
QB CARSON WENTZ
NORTH DAKOTA STATE

I am a big believer in Teddy, but in this league I don't know how you pass on Wentz at 23. Worst case you have a backup QB with huge upside in case of failure or injury.

54: R2P23
WR MICHAEL THOMAS
OHIO STATE

86: R3P23
S KARL JOSEPH
WEST VIRGINIA

122: R4P23
K ROBERTO AGUAYO
FLORIDA STATE

161: R5P21
P TOM HACKETT
UTAH

181: R6P5
TE DAVID MORGAN II
TEXAS-SAN ANTONIO

A fantastic all around TE and athlete. I love this pick in the 6th round.

241: R7P19
QB VERNON ADAMS JR.
OREGON

Another guy I can't pass up on. I like Heinecke, but Adams in the 7th is too good to pass up. Could command a lot of him or Wentz in a year or two.

245: R7P23
ILB JOSH FORREST
KENTUCKY

Just another project for Mike Zimmer, a la Edmond Robinson.

FV,
I have found that Wentz has dropped a few spots after some of the pro days. If he fell that far it really would be difficult to pass on.

That would make for a very interesting QB scenario.
