Eagles release Mathis

Post by dead_poet »

I don't get it. He's still a good guard, isn't he?
@TomPelissero #Eagles released Evan Mathis. Wow.

He has been a pro bowler but is 33 and wanted more money and he did complained quite a bit ...

Chip Kelly does not appear to deal with players that complain... he either trades them or dumps them.

Chip seems to get into personal beefs with players when they go against the grain.

Hopefully no more players make the mistake of thinking Chip doesn't mean what he says about culture. He said it trumps scheme. Believe him
Kelly dissed Mathis pretty good during the draft when he said "Evan Mathis has been available for trade for two years and there have been no offers". Unusual for a HC to say that about a player on national TV.

Mathis had stayed away from OTAs in Philly but was planning on attending their minicamp next week. I guess OTAs aren't quite as voluntary in Chip's world as they are intended to be in the CBA.

Kind of doubt the Vikings pursue him as a free agent. Expect there will be a lot of teams interested in signing him and while he might not get the $5.5M he was due this year in Philly, he'll still probably get some decent offers. Might take a premium offer to induce him to come to Minnesota. Mathis has a connection to Davidson during his time in Carolina so ... who knows. We could use him.

I don't see the Vikings going after him .. there has been such a youth movement of late and its almost training
camp. I am not saying in time he wouldn't help us.

Chip Kelly will soon be unemployed if he isn't careful. He is making enemies quickly.

I think of the way he and Zimmer are handling personnel and I like Zimmer way better.

Eagles release Mathis

I'm not surprised by this move. I was reading quotes yesterday(?) from a few players and they we're pretty vocal about him not wanting him back because of his contract dispute/holdout.

I'm also pretty sure he won't come to Minnesota based on his age/the young players drafted.

I still want him. He's a good guard with a big personality.
