Internet 2015 mock drafts

Post by dead_poet »

Way early, but what else are we going to do?

Josh Norris (12/29):
11. Minnesota Vikings - T Ronnie Stanley, Notre Dame: Stanley has ranked as the No. 1 tackle for weeks. I know the Vikings need more talent at receiver, but giving Bridgewater time to look at his options (which he is willing to do thanks to patience and mobility in the pocket) is even more necessary. Stanley as left and right tackle experience. If he does not declare, La’El Collins and Brandon Scherff are options.

If Stanley is the BPA, sure. If not? Nah. We have all seen how wonderful the top offensive tackles in the past few drafts have performed. I honestly don't understand what is going on with offensive tackles any longer. Outside of Matt Kalil's first successful season, the only other 1st round tackle from the past 3 drafts that has produced consistently has been Riley Reiff in Detroit.

Kalil has had a nagging injury most of the year and played pretty good in his last three starts. It is way to early to give up on him and use a valued 1st round pick on a replacement for him IMO

Walter football's Charlie Campbell (12/26): RB Todd Gurley
The Vikings get another weapon for Teddy Bridgewater. Who knows if and when Adrian Peterson will back with the team. He also has a huge contract and may be slowing down.

Sources say that they don't see Gurley falling past the middle of the first round. They feel he's too good to fall that far. Gurley (6-1, 232) has surprising speed to go along with size, power, vision, balance, good ball security and picks up a lot of yards after contact. The junior justified the hype this year with a string of dominating performances before tearing an ACL. Gurley averaged 7.4 yards in 2014 for 911 yards with nine touchdowns. He hauled in 12 passes for 57 yards as well. Gurley also returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown against Clemson.

Even though Gurley was suspended for autographing memorabilia, NFL sources from multiple teams have told WalterFootball.com that Gurley won't be downgraded because of it. They say that Gurley is a great, hard-working kid who loves football. He's getting high character grades.

Walterfootball.com's Charlie Campbell (1/2/2015): R1: DeVante Parker, WR, Louisville, R2: T.J. Yeldon, RB, Alabama, R3: Jake Fisher, OT, Oregon
Minnesota Vikings: DeVante Parker, WR, Louisville
The Vikings get a No. 1 receiver for Teddy Bridgewater. Greg Jennings is aging while Cordarrelle Patterson had a down season. Taking Bridgewater's best receiver from college makes sense for helping the development of Minnesota's young quarterback.

Parker missed the first seven games this year with a broken left foot. He returned to the field against N.C. State (9-132) and had a superb game against Florida State (8-214). The senior only played in six games this season, yet he totaled 43 receptions for 855 yards and five scores.

Parker was Teddy Bridgewater's best receiver in 2013. Parker was banged up with injuries, but totaled 46 receptions for 743 yards and 11 touchdowns. He led the Cardinals with 744 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2012. The 6-foot-3, 205-pound Parker is an excellent red-zone weapon. Many were surprised when he decided to return to Louisville for his senior year.

Pick change; previously Todd Gurley, RB
Minnesota Vikings: Jake Fisher, OT, Oregon
The Vikings grab an offensive tackle to push or replace Matt Kalil.

Fisher has played well in 2014. With Tyler Johnstone tearing an ACL in the preseason, Fisher moved from right tackle to left tackle. The senior was impressive against Michigan State and edge rusher Shilique Calhoun, who is an effective pass-rusher. Fisher's stock has improved with his display of versatility.

Fisher (6-6, 300) played well for the Ducks in 2013 by opening up a lot of holes on the ground. Against Stanford, UCLA and Texas, he had some rough moments in pass protection. He also missed a few games with injuries as a junior.
Minnesota Vikings: T.J. Yeldon, RB, Alabama
Who knows if and when Adrian Peterson will back with the team. He also has a huge contract and may be slowing down. Minnesota could draft another runner to pair with Jerick McKinnon.

Yeldon has averaged 5.1 yards per carry in 2014 for 932 yards with 10 touchdowns. He has 15 receptions for 180 yards and a touchdown, too. Yeldon had ball-security issues in 2013, and while he has been better as a junior, they haven't gone away completely. Yeldon is a smooth runner who has quickness, balance, cutting ability and vision.

In 2013, Yeldon averaged six yards per carry for 1,235 yards with 14 touchdowns. The sophomore chipped in 18 catches for 160 yards, too. Yeldon received only 175 carries in 2012, but totaled 1,108 yards and 12 touchdowns. The freshman caught 11 passes for 131 yards and a score.

While Eddie Lacy was a large downhill runner, Yeldon showed some speed. He ripped off a number of big gains in 2012. Yeldon's first-step quickness didn't look as good in 2013 after he gained some muscle. Yeldon is now listed at 6-foot-2 and 218 pounds.

Pick change; previously Devin Smith, WR

I would like these picks as well. I think drafting Parker is a must and I like the idea of picking up Josh Martin in the third round, but I'm not sure about the Yeldon pick. Is it more wise to draft a defensive player in the second round (possibly a LB)? Once we get closer to draft day and we find out more about the Peterson situation, we will be able to decide if we need to draft a running back, or if run defense is the more important aspect to assess in the draft.

Parker's history with Bridgewater and his playmaking ability would seem to make him a logical pick but I'd be a little concerned about his durability at the next level.

That is a concern, though a broken foot is better than an ACL or other major joint injury history. I am a bit concerned about his burst off the line and his route running too, especially considering whether his talent warrants the 11th overall pick. We have to go BPA I think. We just have too many holes.

I thought this was a good write up on players in the non-playoff bowls:

Agreed and honestly, based on what I know of him, Parker doesn't strike me as an 11th pick in the draft talent, which isn't to say he couldn't be a good addition to the Vikes or a successful NFL player.

Thanks for that link. Lippett's intriguing, Gordon's a stud and I'm very interested in seeing how petty performs at the Senior Bowl and how he'll do at the next level.

I'm very much in the BPA camp. The Vikes need impact players. They failed to score 20 points in 9 of 16 games this year. Their run defense struggled too much. they need playmakers that can help them close out games or better yet, to just put games out of reach. :)

One position I really doubt they'll draft in R1 is OT. It's possible, but I thought Kalil's game picked up down the stretch and I didn't get the impression the team was as down on him as fans and the media were. Loadholt's basically entrenched at RT. Unless a tackle they just feel is way too good to pass up falls into their lap at #11, I doubt they'll go in that direction.

Agreed. Maybe a G in the 2nd - 4th, or some OL help via free agency, but I see it as a very low possibility that they go OT at 11.

I could see just about any position on D, a WR, a RB even...

I think Petty is just as good a prospect as Bortles was last year. They kind of remind me of one another.

I agree with the people that are hesitant on drafting Parker. He's injury prone, and I think his history with Bridgewater is a little overrated. There's some value to it, but I don't think it's enough to warrant us reaching for him at 11. I'm guessing that the consensus among experts (if there is such a thing so far from the draft) is that he's more in the 20-25 range from a BPA standpoint.

Walterfootball.com (1/14/2015):
Minnesota Vikings: Brandon Scherff, OT/G, Iowa
Matt Kalil was a human turnstile this past year, but he dealt with an injury. He'll almost definitely get one more chance next season. Brandon Scherff could be drafted as insurance, though. In the meantime, Scherff can take over at the left guard position, which has been problematic for quite some time.
Minnesota Vikings: T.J. Yeldon, RB, Alabama
Adrian Peterson may never play for the Vikings again, so Minnesota may want to find a new running back. Jerick McKinnon looked good, but he can't handle the load on his own, while Matt Asiata is just a short-yardage specialist who will be entering free agency.
Minnesota Vikings: Jacoby Glenn, CB, Central Florida
The Vikings need a long-term starter across from Xavier Rhodes, so they could target a cornerback in the early rounds.

Pick change; previously Quandre Diggs, CB

Sbnation.com (1/14):
11. Minnesota Vikings: Kevin White, WR, West Virginia

Even if Cooper and Parker are taken before Minnesota comes up in the first round, the Vikings still have options at wide receiver. White is a big talent who some are starting compare to Julio Jones, in terms of skill set. He would come in and immediately give the Vikings a lead receiver who can stretch the field.
