Alec Ogletree - LB - Player
Coach Leslie Frazier strongly hinted Sunday that the Vikings may use one of their first-round picks on a middle linebacker.
The Vikings pick 23rd and 25th. "I'd like to believe there's going to be one there for us," Frazier said. "There's some good players at the linebacker spot, and we have a need to improve our depth and find a middle linebacker." This year's class isn't lacking in intriguing inside linebackers, but most have questions. Georgia's Alec Ogletree has been described as an "immature idiot," while Notre Dame's Manti Te'o has both on- and off-field concerns. Kansas State's Arthur Brown is recovering from a shoulder injury.

Arthur Brown - LB - Wildcats
Kansas State LB Arthur Brown has four visits scheduled this week, with the Bears, Rams, Jaguars and Bengals.
Brown could play inside or weakside linebacker for any of these teams. There were some questions about his health earlier in the process after missing the Senior Bowl, but Brown was no asked to medically rechecked at the NFL Combine. Our own Josh Norris considers him a top 10 talent.

I actually like Jon Bostic a lot, but I'm biased because the Gators are my favorite college team.
Anyway, here's my take on him. The Gators had a blazing fast defense, which was nice but they needed a stone wall at MLB to stop opposing RBs from power running at them all day. That's where Bostic came in handy. The guy was a pitbull, especially as a between the tackles MLB. There is no doubt that he did a heck of a job for the Gators. My biggest question is whether or not he's the "3-down" MLB that the Vikings want. In my view, he is not. However, if the Vikings pick him somewhere in the middle rounds, I won't complain.

Re: MLB prospects
I agree. I've been a Bama fan for years (before Saban so not a band wagon) and I just want a monster in the middle that thumps. He and Minter are solid in that sense. The SEC produces some great players, some dont translate as well as others. Bostic has good speed and they say he fits pretty good in Tampa 2.losperros wrote:

This draft is just so deep in our needs and there isn't much separation between WRs and MLBs i think. I mean they say Ogletree is heads above everyone but his flags bring him down.

McShay on MLBs after Alec Ogletree
Heres a link to a video of Kevin Siefert discussing this subject with Steve Muench of Scouts, Inc.:

Opinions sure vary on these linebackers...I'm going to spread McShay's answers over a few posts, but we'll start with his take on the middle linebacker situation after Georgia's Alec Ogletree. If Ogletree is drafted before the Chicago Bears' No. 20 overall pick, which is quite possible given his skill set, would any of the remaining middle/inside linebackers be worthy of a first-round draft pick? And who would be worth looking at later in the draft?
After Alec Ogletree "it's Teo and that's it," says Todd McShay of the middle linebackers worthy of a first-round pick.
The list of possibilities includes Notre Dame's Manti Te'o, LSU's Kevin Minter, North Carolina's Kevin Reddick, Oregon's Kiko Alonso and Kansas State's Arthur Brown. McShay was unequivocal in his answer.
"I think it's Te'o and that's it [in the first round]," he said. "I know specifically at least one other team that has Minter and Te'o neck-in-neck and are debating the two. But that's a 3-4 team, not a 4-3 team, and at least in my opinion Te'o fits better as a 4-3. …
"For 4-3 teams, I think Te'o would have the advantage, but Minter is not that far behind in some team's minds. After that, there is a bigger dropoff and you get into the third round before get into Kiko Alonso from Oregon or Kevin Reddick from UNC."
Minter, according to McShay, is "maybe on the same part athletically and quickness-wise with Te'o." But Te'o "diagnoses things a lot quicker when you watch the tape." In the end, Te'o has a better chance of being a three-down linebacker in the NFL than Minter does, McShay said, and that is what you would want if you're drafting an inside linebacker in the first round.
I asked McShay specifically about Brown, who many of you suggested would be a good fit for the Bears and Vikings given their schemes. McShay projects Brown as a middle- second-round value for teams who play the Tampa-2 scheme.
"He fits the Tampa 2," McShay said. "But you've got to cover him up. You have to cover up Arthur Brown. He is a speedser that can go sideline to sideline and you get guys out on him and he gets in trouble fast."

manti looked very good with his sitdown with jon gruden. he isn't fast or a workout warrior but seems like he has a high nfl IQ.mrc44 wrote: I actually agree with you regarding Manti's draft stock. I never thought he was worth a 1st round draft pick and I think a lot of big boards are going to have him in the #50-#100 top player. After the pro day, A lot of scouts and analysts are saying he is a normal LB, nothing special, but nothing wrong with him. If he didn't play for Notre Dame he would be somewhere along Bostic's current appeal and draft stock.

Alec Ogletree - LB - Player
NFL Network's Mike Mayock says he is "scared to death" of Georgia LB Alec Ogletree as a first-round pick due both to off- and on-field concerns.
Ogletree is a candidate to slide out of the first round because his character is a nightmare. "I’m scared to death about Ogletree, both for on- and off-the-field issues," Mayock said. "When you put the tape on, he has no clue what he’s doing. He looks like a safety that somebody plugged inside at inside linebacker. He just runs around." Mayock also called Ogletree's work ethic and passion for the game "question marks right now."

That said, Mayock still has him ranked as the top MLB in this draft. Here's a more complete take (at the link, he also mentions Vince Williams as a riser at the position and Michael Mauti as a sleeper):dead_poet wrote:Alec Ogletree - LB - Player

Thanks for posting that info. The part I highlighted above is the main thing that scares me about Ogletree. Add in the character concerns and I still think the Vikes should stay away, even if he's on the board for them. At this point, after watching lots of video and reading as much as I can about the top 4 MLBs, I hope it's Te'o who ends up a Viking. Maybe I'll regret it, maybe he'll be a circus-like distraction, maybe he'll be too slow to be the 3 down, Tampa 2 MLB they want but I think he brings the football instincts/intelligence, MLB build, tackling ability and leadership they want at the position. Hopefully, he brings everything else too. He's been a great player at every level of the game so far and he looks like the best bet to me. YMMV.``I’ve got him No. 1 among the inside linebackers, but hesitantly. I think Manti Te’o and Kevin Minter ultimately are going to be really solid inside ‘backers for a lot of years. With Ogletree, you’re just betting on the upside.
``I’m scared to death about Ogletree, both for on and off the field issues. When you put the tape on, he has no clue what he’s doing. He looks like a safety that somebody plugged inside at inside linebacker. He just runs around.
``He’s gong to go in the first round. Some of the Cover-2 teams will love him because he can run down the middle of the field like a safety. If you can train him and he loves the game and he has a work ethic, all of which are question marks right now, the kid can be special.
``But I’m very hesitant about this kid. I recognize his athletic ability. I know he fits today’s NFL. But if I was a GM, I’d probably be leaning toward Te’o or Minter because I’m a little more conservative.’’

I will be very, very, very disappointed if we take Olgetree. I don't think we have the staff that can keep him under wraps, nor do I think he a good choice at linebacker for our team. (Rephrased).dead_poet wrote:Alec Ogletree - LB - Player

Sounds like the Cordarelle Patterson of LB's but with character concerns and work ethic / passion problems. Unlike Patterson that's much too scary for a first round pick.

Patterson has never been arrested or suspended, nor has he ever failed a drug test. His work ethic has never been questioned nor has his passion.
As far as his character concerns they are minor as compared to Ogletrees
