Or ... you can just be like my brother and enjoy every movie you see - even if they are poorly scripted, poorly acted, or have been directed by a complete idiot.
Rotten tomatoes...where everyone with an opinion feels it's their job to let everyone know it, in the most annoying and jerkoffish way possible! And it seems like some people only post a review because they can, or in order to counter someone else!

Um, ... isn't that the point: getting the most opinions from the most people?

I mean, an opinion website without opinions doesn't do much good; does it?

Rottentomatoes is actually a good representation of an aggregate social dynamic.

I would stay away from the "talkier" Top 100 films of all time (e.g Annie Hall) and go for the more action-packed ones. You should enjoy Patton. That and The Maltese Falcon will be a good measure.

I would say if it received a lot of "buzz" but never was really popular in mainstream movie theaters, you'd be best to stay away, unless you just have a gut feeling. It seems like you trend toward action, but action with intelligence and characters. You also seem to have a very "macho" feel to your list. (That's not a bad thing!)

The shocker for me is that you liked "Lost in Translation". Aside from gazing at the gorgeousness that is Scarlett Johannsen, I hated that movie. And I usually like art house type movies.

Unless you have hit a long string of renting movies you hated, I don't think you should worry too much. The thing about Netflix is you aren't wasting money, IMO. If it really sucks, stop watching it and send it back and get another one... no harm, no foul. Believe me, I ended up renting some real pieces of crud in my time. Just roll with it.

thats interesting that it comes off that way from my list. i actually really like indie films. i can't imagine someone hating "Lost in Translation". i loved it. now "broken flowers" wasn't that great... I think you're right about the heady action movies i do like a lot of them. I don't like the ones that just have special effects or just action IE "Starship Troopers" or James Bond...

which version of stalingrad are you recommending? there is a 2003 and 1993 version.

The 1993 Stalingrad is a theatrical movie.

The 2003 Stalingrad is a documentary.

Watch Stalingrad (1993) and then Enemy at the Gates (2001).
I don't like the ones that just have special effects or just action IE "Starship Troopers" or James Bond...
Many of the stunts in Casino Royale (2006) were actual physical stunts rather than blue screen effects.

Starship Troopers was a shell of what the book was. What a waste of film.

Have you seen Clerks already? If you have not, Clerks 2 will be confusing and not be nearly as good. It is a true sequel.
Miller's Crossing
Easily one of my favorite movies. Intelligent, believable twists and one of the best neo-noir movies ever made.

I guess I don't understand the love some have for these two movies. I despised both of them.

Loved both Clerks movies as well as Miller's Crossing...

What Brian said...you need to see the first Clerks first and THEN the 2nd.

They definitely are not for everyone. I don't know many people who are apathetic towards Clerks. You either like it or hate it.

Have you seen Dogma?

I thought Cinderella Man was astounding and the only reason it never got Oscar buzz was it was released too early in the season. Paul Giamatti is great in it and Crowe gives a very strong performance. Also an accurate insight into the Depression Era.

Sorry, my intention is not to hog this thread, I just love talking about movies.

Same for me, although I didn't think Dogma was that bad.
