Zimmer in "big games"

Post by TSonn » Mon Oct 19, 2020 1:23 pm

We've got a thread about Cousins in "big games" so I think it's worth looking at Zimmer in big games.

Zimmer's best wins:
  • 2015 @ GB to win the division
  • 2017 vs NO divisional round - Minneapolis Miracle (ignoring that the defense allowed Brees to do whatever he wanted in the 2nd half)
  • 2019 @ NO wildcard round

Zimmer in other big games:
  • 2015 @ SEA to create space in the NFC North and in the NFC race. Lays a 38-7 egg.
  • 2015 vs GB to take a 2 game lead in the NFC North. Loses 30-13.
  • 2017 @ CAR to take a lead in the NFC and to have best shot at NFC Championship home game. Lost 31-24. NFC Championship goes through Philly.
  • 2017 @ PHI. 38-7. Eagles embarrass the Vikings.
  • 2018 vs CHI win and we're in! Lost 24-10 to 2nd and 3rd stringers at home.
  • 2019 @ SEA to create separation in the NFC playoff picture. Lost 38-30. Score was closer than the actual game.
  • 2019 vs GB to tie up the division. Lost 23-10.
  • 2019 vs CHI to have a chance to jump to 5th seed and play a heavily injured Philly team. Lost 21-19.
Zimmer also hasn't beat LaFleur or Nagy yet and I wouldn't bet that that happens this year either.

I'm sure I missed some on both lists, but those are the games I remember thinking were all huge moments to make a splash in the playoff race (or the playoffs, obviously) and Zim came up short, often getting embarrassed and outcoached.

Feel free to add to the lists and/or add more context as I was going off memory.

I will never understand how fans think Zimmer is a great coach, he is a terrible head coach

He cant out scheme the good coaches and currently has the worst defense in the NFL. Time to go, along with Rick to.

It goes beyond his headcoaching career. Check out his team's from when he was DC in Cinci.

His defense has a history of being exposed in the playoffs.

Zimmer became Andy Reid (before his ring) with his atrocious time management too.

Its an answer to how people could think hes a good coach. If you can't be a good coach without winning the superbowl then the Vikings have never had a good coach.

I know that's one of the main talking points for Zim supporters. I will say he took our team from not beating the teams we should beat to beating those teams with a little more consistency - he even got quite a few wins outdoors when our team was on a ridiculous outdoor losing streak before him.

Since the NFCC loss, though, he hasn't been beating the teams they should beat as often anymore - he's slipping there. He's also 4-9-1 outdoors since the NFCC loss.

He's been on a downward trajectory since the NFCC (I know, I know, that's when Cousins got here too, he's also part of the problem) with no outlook in the immediate future (2-3 years) to get back on the upswing.

We need a coach who almost always beats the teams we should beat AND wins 50% off the games against playoff teams / big games for the standings.

Reid was far more successful even before KC. He had a Super Bowl appearance with the Eagles, four consecutive NFC Championship games, I think nine or ten playoff appearances...

It's not really close.

His % of 0.585 is a franchise best? man that really says a lot about this franchise.

It's not a franchise best. Grant has the best winning percentage in franchise history (.621). Green is second with a percentage of .610 as Vikings HC.

Zimmer's percentage is currently at .574 and if the Vikes don't get it together, it will obviously be lower by the end of the season. As you can see, it's already dropped.

Winning percentages for other Vikings head coaches:

Burns: .547
Childress: .527
Tice: .492
Frazier: .398
Van Brocklin: .363
Steckel: .188

Ha! Forgot all about "sour Jerry"! That's a cringe-worthy list right there. I've had several interactions with Les Steckel, great guy but holy cow forever tagged with that .188. Very possible Zim is heading for his own 3-win season.

So we have had two coaches above 0.600 not bad! better than having none. Still compared to some of the coaches other Franchises have had, definitely not the best track record.
