That kicker should have been gone somewhere during preseason and shouldn't have been drafted in the first place. While Treadwell was a legitimate draft pick (though not a first-rounder), he has swung and missed so many times prior to this season that his metaphorical interlocutors have pitched a veritable no-hitter.
How much of this debacle falls on our ST coach Priefer? That's 2 blocked punts in 4 non-preseason games. Seems we are not providing enough ST practice time, or Priefer is missing some beats. I would imagine his opinion weighed heavily in the Carlson over Kai decision, no? Really not loving special teams right now.

Priefer's troops have obviously been suffering in multiple ways -- that blocked punt was hardly the first hiccup attributable to our punting team during this campaign. But I'm thinking that a decision like which kicker to keep (or which ones to bring in) would be made at a higher level.

I'd have to think Priefer is on the hot seat or close to it.

Their punt return game is bad too. Sherels has five defenders on him on every punt when he catches it. When they do return a kickoff, they get to the 20. Special teams is terrible.

My thoughts

1. I was a Cousins skeptic but he is rapidly changing that.

2. Vikings defense is elite (against bad and mediocre offenses)

3. Treadwell will be here until his contract is finished. Seen this time and time again in the nfl and mlb
where teams refuse to admit they blew a first round pick on a terrible player. They needed a wr who
could stretch the field and ended up with a small TE instead.

4. I'll give Carlson one more game and no longer

5. Vikings OL can't run block and can't block on ST. Two blocked punts in their last four meaningful games. Probably should have spent 8 million on a FA lineman than on Richardson. Even though he's played well he is a luxury.

6. Playcalling a huge MEH thus far.

7. I have never once called for Speilman to be fired but am moving in that direction.

8. As frustrating as this game was, a tie in GB is far from a disaster.

I said it after we cut Forbath. It was too early. A long FG in Denver isn't a true test. Balls tend to travel further up in that thin air.

Our Thursday night game against the Rams will be a huge game.

Absolutely. They are looking unbeatable.

808vikingsfan wrote: Sun Sep 16, 2018 4:56 pm I was confident he'd make it. He missed two longer attempts earlier. I thought theres no way he'd miss a relatively short try . I don't think it was that obvious.

I used obvious because it is obvious now, after the miss, that trusting Carlson to make that FG was a mistake.
And I don't remember the situation vs Seattle. Did they wind the clock down as well?
It's irrelevant. My point was he should have learned that even short field goals aren't guaranteed.
My thought is so much can go wrong on any play. A short FG is one of the more high percentage plays I would think.
A coach should consider the circumstances and Zimmer probably did but I think he made the wrong call. A short FG is a high percentage play with a proven veteran kicker, holder, etc. in good conditions. Today, the conditions were fine but with a rookie kicker who's 0-2 on the day attempting a game-winning FG on the road, in OT, against the team's biggest rival, the percentages went down and we all know the outcome.

Anyway, people will either agree or disagree but I'm with those who think the Vikes should have tried to score a TD in that situation rather than just playing for the FG attempt.

1. Cousins could have completely won me over if he hadn't thrown that pick that was called back, and then thrown another pass on the next down that also should have been picked. You can't always count on Clay Mathews or the refs bailing you out, and there is usually no room for those kind of mistakes at the end of games. After watching what Case and Bradford have done on their new teams, it appears our offense is very QB friendly and I expect him to put up big numbers. I need more than that though, for his contract to be worth it.

6. I agree, Shurmur's offense was better so far.

7. How so? He put together a very good team outside of the kicker spot.

8. Again agree. Weird game, but not a disaster.

Would love to see the "hold" that Smith committed to get that INT called back. It seemed odd how late that flag came in.

Anyone see it live or have a video? For some reason, they never showed a replay...

Crazy game.

My one silver lining to the storm clouds? I believe that with Cousins, Thielen and Diggs we finally have an Offense that can put up points in a hurry when it needs to. There's a lot of season left to play.

Pondering Her Percy wrote: Sun Sep 16, 2018 5:21 pm Cousins was the mvp of that entire game. And the only reason he didn’t have a perfect QBR for the most part was because of his one INt that wasn’t his fault at all.
The one that counted wasn't his fault. The one that didn't, that should have ended the game, absolutely was.
Pondering Her Percy wrote: Sun Sep 16, 2018 5:21 pm Overall though, kirk is the real deal. No question about it. He’s got the pieces around him to push this team a long long way
You are right, he does have the pieces around him to go a long way. They went to the NFC championship last season with a backup QB. A backup QB who put up very good numbers with these very same pieces.

His game today was very good, I won't complain about it, despite the pick that wasn't. But he does have a long way to go before he will be on the same level as Rodgers. A single playoff win and a record better than 9-7 would be a good start for me.

Agreed and it's nice to see an offense like that.

I see as many reasons for optimism as pessimism after this game (and vice versa, of course). It was that kind of performance.
