5th Round Pick (2)- Daniel Carlson- K, Auburn

Post by Pondering Her Percy »

Vikings selected Auburn K Daniel Carlson with the No. 167 overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft.
Carlson (6’5/213) was Auburn’s kicker all four years, earning SEC Special Teams Player of the Year in 2016 and 2017 and becoming the SEC’s all-time leader in points scored (480) as a senior. Carlson nailed 80.7% of his career field goal tries and drilled touchbacks on 63.4% of his career kickoffs. NFL.com’s Gil Brandt rated Carlson as the No. 83 player in the entire 2018 draft.

I was hoping for this before the draft. Guys taken now are such long shots, it makes sense to me to grab a guy that you know will contribute. Hopefully we get some touchbacks and actually attempt some 60 yarders now.

Bye, Bye, Kai! (someone make me an NSYNC meme)

I had high hopes of Aguayo (he choked, sucked, all that big time).

I have the same high hopes for Carlson, let’s hope he’s the next big thing!!

@GoesslingStrib

Carlson said he's hit "quite a few kicks from 50-plus" over the years, and hit from 65 in private workouts. He's hit from 75 in altitude in Colorado. He said he feels confident from 65 yards indoors. "If I'm hitting the ball clean, that's something I can do pretty consistently."

One of the beat writers (Tomasson?) called Kai to get his reaction and allegedly he hung up.

While Kai wasn't the best, I have to give him props for the big kick toward the end of the Saints game when we were down. Good Luck and best wishes Kai.

I have always been a Forbath fan. I was happy he was re-signed. We all knew this was coming though.

I like this pick. I read that he has a lot of experience kicking in the cold. He can help us win in Green Bay.

Maybe if Forbath hit more than 87% of his extra points, he'd have an argument.

I think Conklin and Carlson are 2 players who can start day 1. And I bet they surprise some people. Even if we sometimes use Conklin as a large WR. Nice hands, athletic.

Let's hope this kid is our franchise kicker for the next 20 years. Thought we might have that after Walsh's rookie season, then something mental seemed to go haywire with Walsh.

When your team is built around defense kicker is an even more important position than normal, in my opinion. A wise investment.

I completely agree. This was one pick that I did not have any problem with!
