The "turf" that everyone sees is really more for looks, I could be wrong but I don't think the fake grass part does a whole lot. It's pretty slick. It's the underneath, which is basically a bunch of rubber pellets that does most of the work. If you take a stadium tour you can walk on the field and see it.

I think turf keeps things constant whereas grass/dirt there's more variability. Is the dirt wet, frozen, dry, etc. I think that makes it difficult to compare the two.

Do the Vikings practice on grass? I think when Childs had both knees blow out it was on grass. I think if anything it has to do with players are getting bigger and faster and it's harder for certain parts of the body to keep up with the stress.
