The bottom line for me is the story doesn't add up. It has the illogical complexity of an excuse. It seems far more likely to me that a player with a history of alcohol-related problems had a slip than that the Vikings signed such a player and, en masse, from trainers to coaches to teammates, failed to let him know there's alcohol in the tea they make available at their facilities and he should avoid drinking it. Nobody knew Floyd's situation and thought to warn him about it? I find that almost impossible to believe.

If the team did tell him to drink it my guess is that he saw it as a team sanctioned way to get a buzz. One or two of those probably wouldn't have shown up and that's probably what the team had in mind.

Perhaps it's something of a half truth - yes the team intended for him to drink the tea, but not that much.

That seems unlikely. It's worth noting that at no point in the PP article on this does it actually say the Vikings encouraged or permitted Floyd to drink the tea. It's hard to imagine they would since by doing so, he'd be crossing a pretty bright red line and violating the terms of his house arrest.

I just don't think this story passes the smell test.

They didn't say it outright but Floyd specifically said they encouraged him and they backed him up after that statement. They corroborated that they have it on hand at the facility. Honestly even if he is telling the truth and that's all he drank it's dumb of him. Like you said, it's on the label.

I'm doing this from my phone, and forgive me if has been posted already... https://www.si.com/extra-mustard/2017/0 ... ol-science

I wish they would have given figures for the BUD light they talked about. I just think ha had to have had A LOT to approach the 0.055 he was at.

I haven't been able to find any articles that make it clear they specifically encouraged him. Reports have said he stated in a sworn affidavit that the Vikings encourage their players to consume the tea and that it is served “on tap” at Winter Park but saying they encourage their players to do that isn't the same as saying they specifically encouraged him to drink it. I find it impossible to believe the Vikings don't know about the alcohol content of tea they are serving at their facilities or that they would sign a player in Floyd's circumstances and not warn him to refrain from drinking that tea.

They've backed him up by saying they believe his story. From the PP article:

Quote:
Warren corroborates Floyd’s claim that he was unaware kombucha tea contained alcohol when he drank several bottles while watching movies late into the early morning of June 11 at the Minnesota house of Vikings tight end Kyle Rudolph, his former college roommate at Notre Dame.

That's a nice show of support but Warren wasn't present at the time so he's essentially acting as a character witness and saying he believes Floyd.

That's not the same as corroboration that they encouraged or allowed him to drink it and according to the reports I've seen about this, he failed his test after supposedly drinking the tea at Rudolph's house. Is there any indication that he ever actually drank it at their facility?

Exactly.

Personally, I think the Vikes should drop this guy like a hot potato.

I just hope it was an accident and not a deliberate act to consume.

Some random comments:

From what I've read, he was still restricted from alcohol even after finishing his house arrest so the time table of when it happened is mute.

I really don't care if the Vikings keep him or let him go. I just hope he wins his battle over his addiction.

At least he wasn't caught drinking and driving. Hard to hurt anyone else in front of a TV.

Has Rudolph made any comments on the subject yet? Who bought the tea?

not all kombucha has the same percentage of alcohol.....some of it has enough that you need to be over 21 to buy it.
that variety gives me a little buzz....but i rarely drink alcohol. either way, it's not the kind of thing one would drink 'several' bottles of in a short span.
i call bs.

The first time this guy scores a red-zone TD, kombucha sales will skyrocket among Vikings fans.

Looks like a 4 games suspension to start the year.

I don't see him sticking around unless he has a dominant camp and preseason. He could be a good "spar" partner for the DB's at least.

Yeah I think if any other player has a good
camp Bucky, Mo Bo or any of the TE's show
red zone ability he is possibly not going to make
the team. The Pats cut him for a reason

I think it depends. If they truly believe they're at fault for his suspension they may keep him. I think what they do will reveal a lot about what actually happened.
