Identifying the "Mike"

Post by PurpleMustReign »

Why do QBs identify the "Mike" or Middle Linebacker? I know it has to do with protection, but how do they know who it is, and why is that position important?

Most of the time he is setting the adjustments
to the defense (based on what the offense looks like) By watching and listening to him helps
Know the rush or pass assignments. For the Vikings blitzes (a gap for LB's) Harrison will come up and drop off to fooL QB's and OLS into false coverages

Spy gate was recording the signal caller on video and matching up with actual plays so they knew a large percentage of other teams
plays and languages. Basically take a crib sheet with answers into a test.

Also, "Mike" might be the QBs first read in drop back or shotgun passing...whether Mike drops straight back or left/right will determine the second read (weak safety/strong safety) in the QBs progression to an open receiver.

Also this read is made much easier when the linebacker is named Mike.

If Mike the Mike was mic'd, the qb would have an interesting call too.

Are you suggesting that the QB would "Mock Mike, the Mic'd Mike?"
