If Jenkins is healthy then the Sept cast of WRs isn't awful. Ponder seemed to like Jenkins but his health is a concern!

WRs will probably be: Jenkins, Aromashodu, and Harvin as starting 3. Expect to see Rudolph taking in a chunk of catches.

It is similar, but not the same. He tore one in college, this was a double tear, ie both knees, which is exceedingly rare. Also, the only thing Childs has is potential, first year WR breakout seasons are rare, typically it takes a WR until his 3rd season to really come on in the NFL. So in terms of this year, the hit is to the depth chart more than anything. Really though, all they lost was potential. He hadn’t played a single snap so to say we are suddenly in the dumps isn’t necessarily true. We don’t know what he would have done this year, now we’ll never know.

I do agree that of the “new WR” on the team he certainly seemed to have the most impressive upside. At this point I am resolving myself to just hoping that he can make a recovery and then stage a comeback. Hopefully with some luck we’ll see him in 2013 or 2014. He has a long road to recovery ahead of him.

There's been quite a bit of talk about it in this thread:

There are two schools of thought on this:
  1. He was a rookie 4th round crap-shoot, and nobody counts on a rookie 4th rounder to be an important part of any offense. So, while he was looking great for all of ten days in training camp, it's not a huge loss.

The Vikings had so many holes coming into the draft that they were unable to draft a wide receiver any higher than the late 4th round. So they took a chance and drafted a guy who could have been a steal if he'd remained healthy. But he didn't and he wasn't.
  2. On a young rebuilding team with only one solid returning WR, building through the draft is absolutely critical. They could have really used a good rookie receiver to add to the roster, even if he takes a couple years to develop. It hurts them into the future.

You can't waste draft picks, even late 4th rounders. 31 other teams passed on Childs and it took less than two weeks to discover that 31 other teams made the right decision. At the end of this season the Vikings could find themselves no better off at WR than they were at the end of last year, and that's not how you get better.

They picked up Simpson in the off season and don't forget about Jarius Wright. He was actually drafted ahead of Childs and just because he's not "tearing it up" in training camp, as you pointed out, means just as much as if he were having a great camp.

Well ... the Vikings actually passed on him a few times as well. It seems like the end of the 4th round is where you might start taking a shot at an extremely talented guy with an injury concern though.

I agree that they can't afford to waste picks, but in the end that's just how the draft is. Some picks aren't going to amount to anything. Maybe because of injury or lack of skill or bad attitude.

Childs is certainly down, but he isn’t completely out over the long run. He might recover, we just may not see the return on the investment until 2013 or 2014. This isn’t entirely negative, if he does comeback, he will not have any NFL mileage on his body. I do not disagree that at this point he is a long shot, but he was always a long shot at that draft position. The real loss is the year of experience. Of course, Greenway missed his entire rookie season as well, albeit with a less dramatic injury, and he has been stellar ever since. So it is at least possible. Time will tell.

I think it is important to remember that not every draft pick is intended to be an instant contributor on the field. Matt Kalil was taken 4th overall and is expected to be a contributor. Childs was taken in the late 4th round and plays a position that often takes at least 2 seasons to really come alive in the NFL. What is important with Childs is that he does contribute at some point. We already know it won’t be this year, so all we can do is pull for the guy to get back on his feet.

I was really looking forward to seeing what he could do for us.

I am guessing the only reason he lasted to the fourth was because of injury concerns.

you got to take risks sometimes though..

Spielman tends to roll the dice on guys in the 4th round. Guys with high round potential but fell for various reasons, Everson Griffen, Christian Ballard, etc. Even Robison had some injury issues his final year of college.

This time the Vikings rolled the dice and unfortunately crapped out. We'll see how Wright and Ellison pan out.

Frazier said doctors did not find any further damage behind the patellar tendons during Greg Childs' surgery. That's a positive. #Vikings

#Vikings announce WR Greg Childs (knees) has cleared waivers and is now on injured reserve. So is CB Nick Taylor (shoulder).

After deciding the price for Pierre Garçon was too high in free agency, it's tough to lose a potential difference maker so early and so completely.
