 K-Will seeking new contract
Kevin Williams - DL - Vikings
Vikings DT Kevin Williams is seeking a contract extension.
"(The Vikings) might not feel the same way," Williams admitted. "My main thing is to have a good year and whatever happens after that happens after that." Williams is entering the final season of a five-year, $33.2 million contract, but the pact includes a two-year, $16.76 option the Vikings can exercise next offseason. It's doubtful Williams' contract is revisited before then. Source: St. Paul Pioneer Press Jul 3 - 11:23 AM

 Re: K-Will seeking new contract
I am know I am saying this with extreme bias (Kevin Williams is my favorite player and 2nd favorite Viking of all time next to Randy Moss) but I think Minnesota should extend him. Despite what people say, Williams still is a force and is still a top 5 DT. Let's not forget he played the entire season with plantar fasciitis. Although our options behind Williams are young and have potential, they haven't shown they can play solid, consistent football. We already have enough holes on defense, let's not make more by letting Williams go at the end of the season.
P.S.- I really do not want to watch another #93 finish out his career on another team. I know I was only nine when John Randle left the team, but it still was hard to watch because I loved John Randle as well.

 Re: K-Will seeking new contract
This is probably his last year with the Vikings. I don't see them picking up that option.
Maybe he gets re-signed for cheap though.

 Re: K-Will seeking new contract
I'm on the fence about this one. He's certainly not the player he once was. If the Vikings extend his contract it will be an act of faith, and maybe even one of loyalty to the player.

 Re: K-Will seeking new contract
He is 32 and they have cap space. To me the question is if he is worth another 3-4 year deal. IMO he probably is. He may not have the "wow" numbers of his past, but he is still a top 5 player at his position. I could see them drafting to eventually replace him, but it would seem to make sense to give this kind of talent money and draft to fill other needs for the time being.
Obviously after another season all of this stuff could change.

 Re: K-Will seeking new contract
If he wants an extension, by definition that would have to be done before the end of this season as this is the last year of the deal sans the option. And since the option is a 2 year deal and the Vikes only consider extending in the last year of a deal per Spielman, I don't see how Williams is going to get an extension unless the Vikes feel like they want to lock him up yet this season. Given the way Williams has performed the last two seasons I'd say that is unlikely. He's not the superstar he once was and I doubt he will ever be that again. On the flip side, he's a savvy vet who can still play the position and offer some leadership.
I'd feel comfortable with the Vikes offering him a 4 year deal, but for a more modest salary in line with the average for his position. I'd front-load it so if things are tailing off as he nears 36 the cap hit is minimal.

Quote: According to ESPN 1500 Twin Cities, there is not a 2013-14 option on Vikings DT Kevin Williams' contract. Beat writer Tom Pelissero has seen the contract himself and is assured by those in know that there is no two-year, $16.76 million option as has previously been reported. Turning 32 in August, the six-time Pro Bowler is entering a contract season.

 Re: K-Will seeking new contract
Let him walk. There's no reason to invest what he's probably going to want in a 32 year old (33 by the time next season starts) defensive tackle. If he's not asking for some crazy deal, fine. But I'm sure he's going to want to cash in one last time, and there's no reason to do it on a rebuilding team. we might have cap space now, but 2, 3, 4 years? Let's not get stuck with another player on the decline and an overpriced contract!

Extend him but for only the right price. I love Kevin Williams but he is on the decline with a rebuilding team but is a great anchor in the D line.

Source: Tom Pelissero on Twitter Someone missed the punch line: Quote: 4h Tom Pelissero @TomPelissero The bonus proration ends after 2012. From there, it's a straight deal with $7M base salaries in 2013 and '14, plus $500K workout
Quote: 4h Tom Pelissero @TomPelissero That said, a renegotiation is virtually inevitable if #Vikings decide to keep him around. Can't pay $7M/year to a declining player.
So Williams is under contract through 2014 at $7M per year. The Vikings will have a decision to make if they can't renegotiate. If indeed Williams and his agent are seeking a new contract, it's because they damn well know that the Vikings will flat out release him if they don't renegotiate at a much lower salary. Which is a bit less pressure on the Vikes. No worries about Williams entering free agency and a deal can be done any time this season or next off season.

K.will may just have a good year if he's healthy and then it'll really be interesting to see what they do.

 Re: K-Will seeking new contract
Kevin Williams is a guy I would think the Vikings want to keep around. They kept Winfield around. They'll want to keep #69 around too. Those guys are Vikes till the end.
I hope.
KW has humbled quite a bit over the last couple years. I feel he learned a lot from big Pat and maybe he'll want to have that sort of role the next couple years that Pat had. I think he'll stick around and sign a 3yr next offseason.
Again, I hope.

 Re: K-Will seeking new contract
Extend him. I bet this season now that he's healthy he'll reek havoc again. Yes he's 32, but DT tends to be a position that age doesn't really affect until your later later 30's. I wouldn't pay him like a super star anymore, but a decent offer and I bet KWill takes it. He's a hard worker too. Players like him are keepers.

 Re: K-Will seeking new contract
Unless he's willing to take the "home town discount" so to speak, I don't see him resigning with the Vikings. He's not going to get a long term deal. If he has a great year, I think they'll make an effort to resign him at a reasonable price for his production, if he is average or gets hurt, I think his time with the Vikings will be over.
