Re: Spielman's performance

They started and won games (Cassel for the majority of a season). How is that of zero benefit? The moves they made at backup QB didn't end up leaving them with a good starter when Brady finally left but they were still beneficial both at the position and to the team. You're snipping my post man :wi...

Re: Spielman's performance

That's gonna leave a lot of GM's on the unemployment line. While I don't dismiss your take, I certainly feel Zimmer should be first in the firing line if "building a Super Bowl winner" is the criteria I agree but I don't think either one of them is capable of building a Super Bowl winning...

Re: Spielman's performance

I’m going to throw my own form out the window for the rest of this (loooong) post, in that IRL Rick does NOT make all these decisions by himself. But for brevity and at risk of repeating myself for the 37th time, let’s just say Rick makes all these decisions by himself. Most of you have valid point...

Re: Spielman's performance

These are general questions about how the draft process works as far as our owners, GM, scouting and coaching staffs interact that is relevant to this discussion. How much input does ownership have and do they influence or override draft decisions? Who decides that our strategy will be run first an...

Re: Spielman's performance

I just don't see this as the monumental indictment that you and a few others do, for Rick or any other GM. Not many teams in the NFL have a "win ready" backup QB, no matter the team's composition We can debate what "win ready" means but there should at least be a backup they're ...

Re: Spielman's performance

Well said Jim. I think the other thing with Spielman is his strategy benefits greatly from survivorship bias. He brings in 10 shiny new toys that get people excited but are quickly forgotten when they don't pan out. You see this in all aspects from the draft, to UDFAs, to free agent pickups. Thanks...

Re: Spielman's performance

Don't disagree with anything you said, but the above is a little rough. Bridgewater (injury) and Bradford (reactionary trade then injury) certainly had mitigating circumstances. It's not like Spielman coveted Bradford and would have traded a #1 for him regardless of our QB situation at the time. I ...

Re: Spielman's performance

The article was interesting. Thanks for the link. I'll say what I always say: I think assessments of GM performance often focus too much on micro level performance rather than macro level performance. The GM job is primarily about team-building. Drafting is a tool for team-building. Free agency is t...

Re: Let's play "Manage the Cap — 2021"

What coach could have won it all with the rosters provided Zimmer? It takes great teams to win it all, not really good, great. 2017 was close to being great, but the Philly team they faced in the playoffs was much, much better overall. Not just because of coaching either. Zimmer's time here has run...

Re: Let's play "Manage the Cap — 2021"

Why? It's been one of the biggest question marks on the team for a decade and it's still a question mark going into next season? What could possibly give anybody confidence they're going to finally solve that problem? Would you settle for optimism they are going to finally solve it? :D LOL! Sure, I...

Re: Let's play "Manage the Cap — 2021"

Odds are that would be true even if they make a change. Yes, but there might at least be a reason to believe that was a stepping stone to better results rather than part of a repeating pattern in which the Vikes make the playoffs every other year and show little to encourage fans they're ever going...

Re: Tell me again how Zimmer is a great coach?

It was a big gamble that paid off. Lots of teams have made similar big gambles that didn't pay off (Herschel Walker trade anyone?) Put another way, KC got lucky. Plain and simple. They made a bold move and hit paydirt, but it was far more likely to blow up in their face at the time they made it. Bu...

Re: Tell me again how Zimmer is a great coach?

As much as people want to say KC lucked into Mahomes. They also moved up to get him, so they identified something they wanted and went and got him. Don't rewrite history. This is something we almost never do as an organization. We move down. Well said. It's an important observation. The Vikings don...

Re: Let's play "Manage the Cap — 2021"

The only way off is to stop following the team, because any change that is made is likely to result in the same outcome as what we're seeing right now. That isn't saying it is sure to produce that outcome - just that the odds favor it, with some smaller chance that it will get worse than it has bee...
